Current Research Tools

Microexpression Recognition Training (MiX)

MiX will teach you how to recognize microexpressions – facial expressions of emotion that happen when someone tries to conceal or repress their emotion. Everyone has them and unlike regular facial expressions, no one can fake a microexpression. Even though they last only a fraction of a second, anyone can learn to recognize them.

Dr. Matsumoto's Company, Humintell, offers the original version of MiX as well as more advanced training tools to help individuals recognize the scientifically documented concealed signs of emotion.

Subtle Expression Recognition Training (SubX)

Originally funded by and developed for governmental agencies, Humintell's SubX Subtle Expression Online Training can help you to detect subtle expressions, which are associated with the intensity of the emotion, not the time the emotion moves on and off the face.

Recent research suggests subtle expressions may be especially important for people who want to improve their abilities at detecting deception.

Reading signs of emotion in the form of subtle expressions is an important skill for effective communication. Humintell's training can help you with establishing relationships, building rapport, eliciting information, negotiation and many other purposes.

Intercultural Adjustment Potential Scale (ICAPS-55)

The Intercultural Adjustment Potential Scale (ICAPS) is a validated test that measures four important psychological skills associated with successful intercultural adaptation and adjustment. Years of scientific research have shown that the four skills measured by the ICAPS are some of the most important predictors of not only adaptation and adjustment across cultures, but also adaptation and adjustment within a society or culture (intracultural adaptation and adjustment). Thus, it’s a great tool to use to measure adjustment potential in general, whether going abroad, interacting with people from different cultures, or working within one’s own society and culture.

Display Rule Assessment Inventory (DRAI)

Cultural display rules are rules learned early in childhood that help individuals manage and modify their emotional expressions depending on social circumstances (Ekman & Friesen, 1969). The concept of cultural display rules is arguably one of the most important in the study of culture and emotion; they provide valuable information on cultural differences in emotional expression.

Individualism-Collectivism Interpersonal Assessment Inventory (ICIAI)

IC is an important dimension of psychological variation between cultural groups. It has been used to predict and explain cultural similarities and differences across a wide range of psychological phenomena. This test is one of the few available today that allows researchers to assess IC tendencies related to the interpersonal context across multiple social groups and rating domains.
